Architectural Design Inspired by the Zambezi Landscape
Set along a quiet stretch of the Zambezi River, The Palm River Hotel offers a calm counterpoint to the energy of Victoria Falls. Considered one of the standout luxury hotels in Victoria Falls, our property sits comfortably in its riverine setting, just a few kilometres upstream from the mighty crash itself.
Few realise that the hotel’s architecture draws inspiration from the Queenslander style of Australia’s east coast; airy, elevated timber structures adapted for warm climates; reinterpreted by a team of Zimbabwean architects to suit the conditions beside the Zambezi. Verandas, walkways, and riverside terraces are carefully positioned to frame views of the river, trees, and wildlife, ensuring guests are aware of their natural surroundings whether they’re indoors or outdoors.
Let’s take a closer look.
Where River and Structure Meet
What Is the Queenslander Architectural Style?
Emerging in Queensland in the mid-1800s, the Queenslander style was designed for subtropical climates. Detached timber homes were traditionally raised on stilts to protect from flooding and pests, while wide verandas and corrugated metal roofs offered shade and durability during tropical storms. Influenced by Colonial, Victorian, and Federation styles, these homes declined after World War II, but their climate-smart, indoor–outdoor principles remain relevant today and especially relevant in the context of our riverside location.
Our hotel’s architecture merges modern elegance with local character. Drawing from Queenslander traditions, wide verandas, shaded walkways, and generous rooflines create airy, comfortable shared spaces. Our restaurant is a wonderful example of this and you’ll immediately get an impressive sense of space when you walk inside and see the high vaulted ceilings that lead the eye effortlessly outside and merge seamlessly with the seating areas there.
But while the Queenslander style may have guided the concept of our design, the materials, proportions, and orientation are entirely adapted for the Zambezi’s climate and landscape.
The Movement of Water
Pathways at The Palm River Hotel meander organically, rather than march at right angles to one another, echoing the gentle flow of the Zambezi itself. Lawn walkways curve toward the river beneath the trees, while communal areas, terraces, and dining spaces are carefully positioned to enjoy the outdoors without disturbing nature going about its business. This includes traversing wildlife, which we do not hinder with fences along the water.
The beauty of being so open and airy is that natural light floods our interiors, while covered walkways and roof overhangs provide relief from seasonal heat and rain. Every element balances exposure and shelter, allowing our guests to feel both immersed in nature and comfortably at home.
Materials Drawn from the Landscape
When it came to choosing materials for the construction of our hotel, it was important to us to hold with our group’s ethos of sustainability. We also wanted to ensure that the final structure felt like it belonged here. Therefore, timber, stone, sand, and organic textures were used to echo the colours and surfaces along the Zambezi and the use of corrugated metal both nods to Queenslander tradition and provides practical resilience in our climate. Carefully restrained architectural details ensure the river remains the star, with the hotel complementing rather than competing with its surroundings.
One playful addition is the hotel’s own mini Victoria Falls Bridge, connecting the main building to a block of guest rooms. Styled after the iconic landmark downstream, it offers the perfect vantage point for family photos, framed views of the river, and easy access to the pool and riverside dining area.
Gardens That Grow Into Architecture
The grounds reflect the same ethos of natural harmony. Indigenous trees and plants provide shade, attract birdlife, and over time, merge seamlessly with the hotel’s structures. Gardens are designed to feel organic rather than manicured, creating pockets of privacy and tranquillity while reinforcing the sense that our hotel has always belonged on this riverbank.
