An Introduction to Zimbabwean Cuisine

For many first-time visitors, arriving in Victoria Falls is a sensory experience from the very first moment. The air feels warmer, the river broad, and the Falls – mighty. And just as the destination reveals itself in layers, so too does its food: Fresh, seasonal, deeply connected to place, and best savoured together, in community.

We’re firm believers that one of the best ways to get to know a country is through its food. After all, what could be more human than sharing a meal? Zimbabwean cuisine is thoughtful and grounded, shaped by what the land and river provide. Meals are meant to be shared, and at Palm River Hotel, this approach underpins every dining experience, offering guests an introduction to Zimbabwean flavours that is as both approachable and authentic.

Outside of the hotel, you have plenty of Victoria Falls restaurants to choose from, but we’ll be showing you what you can expect right on your doorstep, with us.

Grounded and Shared

At its heart, Zimbabwean food is elemental. Ingredients speak for themselves, enhanced rather than masked. Fresh fish from the Zambezi, slow-cooked meats, home-grown vegetables, indigenous fruits and herbs – these form the backbone of many of our dishes.

Local superfoods such as baobab, marula, matamba, and morogo (wild spinach) appear thoughtfully, providing both nutritional punch and a direct link to the riverine and bush ecosystems that surround Victoria Falls.

Meals are traditionally social occasions; unhurried, shared, and celebratory. This sense of connection, to one another and to the land, carries through modern interpretations at The Palm River Hotel and other considered Victoria Falls restaurants.

Dining at Palm River Hotel

Set on the edge of the Zambezi River, our dining spaces blur the line between indoors and out. High, vaulted ceilings, classic parquet floors, and large sliding doors open onto a shaded veranda and al fresco area. Beyond, expansive lawns and winding pathways lead down to the river, where birdlife and the occasional passing hippo provide a living backdrop – reminding you of that sense of “place” we talked about.

Breakfast here is a quiet moment to watch the river awaken, with a continental buffet complemented by hot dishes. Lunch and dinner menus draw guests from across Victoria Falls, offering à la carte options that are both approachable and distinctive. Local ingredients, often sourced from our on-site vegetable plantation, ensure flavours remain vibrant and authentic.

A taste of the Menu

Palm River Hotel’s menu blends international technique with Zimbabwean ingredients, producing dishes that feel familiar, yet quietly unique.

To name but a few…

Adventurous diners can also sample unique local options such as crocodile or kudu, thoughtfully prepared. Weekly specials highlight seasonal produce, giving the kitchen freedom to explore and innovate – which they love doing, and excel at!

Riverside Dining: A Meal in Nature

For an unforgettable experience, the Riverside Dining Experience immerses guests in both place and palate. Set on a mobile wooden deck along the Zambezi, near the Ra-Ikane River Cruise jetty, this fully outdoor dinner unfolds under the stars, accompanied by the quiet rhythms of the river.

Here, a traditional African barbecue-style meal takes centre stage. Locally sourced meats and ingredients are cooked on open coal fires, while fresh salads, sides, and beverages round out the table.

Gentle performances by local musicians on drums and mbira add ambience, accompanied by birdsong and the occasional presence of wildlife on the opposite river bank – hippos, buffalo, or elephants. The experience is an authentic blend of culinary tradition and riverside serenity, open year-round (weather-permitting) and ideal for groups of six or more.

Food That Feeds More Than the Appetite

Palm River Hotel’s approach to dining has been described as “a culinary experience that awakens your senses and feeds your soul.” Zimbabwean cuisine at its best nourishes both body and spirit through simplicity, care, and connection.
